With the recent hacks of Maine Mendoza’s twitter account, and several ALDUB admins accounts, it’s time that you should secure your twitter and other your social media accounts. Today, we will teach you how to make your Twitter secure, and make sure your account won’t be easily hacked.
1. Login Verification
Using login verification ensures that you are the only one that can access your account by sending a verification code to your phone. Only the person with your phone number can pass the security and login into your account
2. Phishing Links
Sometimes you will receive direct mail from someone you don’t know or someone you know with the shorten URL, if you think it’s suspicious don’t click it. The link can gain your login details, and they can access it leaving you out. Be cautions in clicking links.
3. Suspicious Activity Alerts
Install an activity alerts on your smartphones and tablets, this will monitor your social media activity and report when unauthorized access your accounts. You can try LogDog (android for now) which checks the account 24hours a day. This app will monitor your accounts, and you’ll be alerted if there’s unauthorized access, giving you a quick action to control your accounts.
4. Password Manager
Install an app like LastPass (personally uses this one) or 1Password, it will make your life easier. You can store your password in their encrypted vault, and you can auto-login. Not to mention the password generator that can create pretty long and strong passwords.
5. Social Media Management
If you’re using an account that has a lot of admins, you can certainly use Hootsuite or SproutSocial instead. This will grant your fellow admins to use the account without sharing the information with them.
6. Privacy Settings
These settings can certainly help you secure your account, and who can see your account. Only the people on your circle can view what you posted, thus outsider won’t be able to access it. That is, if you want to keep it from public.
7. Antivirus Software App
Antivirus and security app is one of the best defense against virus, malware, ransom-ware and other malicious threats online. Make sure you download the best antivirus app (I currently use Avast!) and keep it running in the background.
8. Keep it Updated
Make sure your social media app is always updated, updates contains security patch, better usability and other important things that can help your account protected.
9. Keep it Private
Don’t share passwords or other information and pass it through social media or other chat app, bots can detect this and can be used against you. Private messages are not that well protected too, better to give it in an encrypted manner.
10. Location Tracker
Many people doesn’t mind this being on all the time, but hackers and the like can use this to track you down. The internet is always tracking your every move, and many people doesn’t know about this. Every single image you posted, location tracker will marked it. Turn it off when you don’t need it.
11. Installing Apps
Be careful when installing apps, and make sure you read the permission that they are accessing on your devices. Some of them will need your logins into social media, while other will access your contact list even though it doesn’t need it. Review the permissions of these apps, and uninstall those that you don’t need.
12. Change Passwords
It should be a habit to change passwords every 3 months, if you’re using LastPass it will be easy to change it, since it has Password Generator feature. Use long passwords with combination of numbers, capital and small letters, character sign. 25 characters long is the minimum requirement for all of my passwords.
You can also use a free VPN, this way you can hide your actual location and IP. Hackers and ISP will have a hard time tracking you, and will secure your line of connection to the internet. Here’s further tutorial on free VPN.
